“[Fools] wanna bring the 80’s back; it’s ok with me that’s where they made me at” --Jay Z ![]()
Depeche Mode is in vogue again. The Celtics are playing the Lakers in the NBA Finals. Yes indeed the 80’s are back and in honor of that this movie review will highlight one of the quintessential movies of that time. Wall Street (1987). I came across this movie while flipping through the channels one night and was immediately drawn in by the characters and the script. The movie is front lined by Charlie Sheen and Michael Douglas and is directed by THE Oliver Stone. Sheen plays a young stock broker fresh out of college trying to make it big in NYC. His job is to cold call prospective clients and get them to set up brokerage accounts at his firm. I had a similar job before and believe me its painful. Sheen’s character Bud Fox has his eyes set on a whale, Gordon Gekko played by Michael Douglas.
As the movie unfolds Gekko embraces the young Fox as his protégé’ and drops line after line of memorable quotes like "Greed is good" and "What's worth doing is worth doing for money". Things begin to get interesting as Fox finds himself in a world where the dollar line is the ONLY thing that matters and ethics take a backseat to making more money.(Kinda like today’s Wall Street). In the end Bud Fox must decide what is important to him and what he truly values.
It gets my vote because Oliver Stone is a genius, Charlie Sheen was skinny and who doesn’t love 80’s fashion? The movie highlights the culture and lingo of Wall Street and you get a fast baptismal into the world of deal making. Pop open some Asti Spumante and let the good times roll.
