Shopping online has become extremely convenient for all of us.  You can purchase from almost all the heavy hitters now-a-days.  Brick and mortar stores like Walmart, Target and Best Buy are all represented.  You can buy groceries as well as order and track the status of your pizza online.  Unfortunately, we have to find the balance between these conveniences and security.

Here are some steps to follow to make your online transactions more secure.
Only Purchase from Reputable Sites
I mentioned the sites Walmart.com, BestBuy.com and etc.  You should be fairly safe purchasing from these sites.  If you come across a site like Joey'sDiscountTVs.com, you should do some more checking before handing over your credit card information.  You can check sites like the Better Business Bureau. http://www.bbbonline.org/ to verify authenticity and reliability.

Make Sure the Site is Secure
Look at the address bar to ensure that you're in the right place.  Www.walmart.identitytheft.com is not the same as www.walmart.com.  When inputting private information such as billing and credit information the site address should start with https:// to show that the site is secure.  The browser should also show a lock as further verification that the site is secure.

Protect Your Privacy
When signing up for an account use an email account that you check regularly.  When choosing a password, it is very important to choose a strong password that is hard to guess.  This password should be different than ones that are used on other sites.  Use an unpredictable combination of numbers, letters and symbols.  Keep your password safe.  The merchant should never ask for your password.

Pay by Credit
It is wise to pay with a credit card to reduce your Liability.  If credit card fraud is reported, the card holder is only liable for $50.  Fraud on a debit or ATM card must be reported within 48 hours to keep your Liability to $50.  If it is not reported within 48 hours, the debit card holder could be responsible for up to $500.  The card holder would be completely responsible for fraudulent charges if it is not reported with 60 days after the bank statement that contained the fraudulent charges.  So, pay close attention to your statements.

Keep a Record
Keep the receipt from the transaction.  Most merchants send receipts via email where it can be saved an or printed.
