"It don't matter if I write rhymes, I write checks" -- Diddy

Lets face it, Danity Kane and Day 26 are no Total and 112 but Diddy continues to make dollars because he has honed the art of being a businessman. He had a dream and now is the walking, talking, shade wearing embodiment of Bad Boy.   Starting a business isn’t for everyone, but best believe most people have at least played with the notion at one point or another. Over the next several weeks we are going to give you some tips/advice/wisdom on steps to take. We are not entrepreneurial gurus but we can at least tell you from our experience what NOT to do.

The Dream Phase

This is easily my favorite phase since it allows all my inner Jacob to come out. While there are no feasibility studies or Profit & Loss Statements to complete, the dream phase is crucial to the start of your business. If you have no idea what kind of business you want to start, ask yourself these questions:

What really motivates me? If I could do anything in the world and money was not an issue, what would it be? If I had to work for free (which you may be doing in the beginning) what would make me the happiest? What am I really good at?

Once you’ve figured out what you want to do, lay the groundwork mentally for how you want your business to look. The benefits of mental imagery or visualization have been well documented in all fields. In The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey calls it Beginning with the End in Mind. It is important to get as detailed as you can in your thoughts. You are laying a mental framework for your new creation. Don’t be afraid to have fun with your dream, get outside the box, crazy ideas change the world. Did you ever think you would see Crocs sold at Macy’s? I sure didn’t but the designer behind the idea probably did. It may sound crazy but everyday spend a little time mentally doing the day-to-day aspects of your operation. Everything from meeting with customers to balancing the books. I’ve imagined myself on the cover of Fortune so many times I already know what I will be wearing when that day comes (And yes I will be fly!)

One thing is important. Be sure to document the details of your dream. It doesn’t have to be exhaustive but just some notes for you to look at as you continue down the entrepreneurial path. More to come….
